Customised 48 Port Network Switch

Crystal Rugged Ethernet Switch RCS7750-48F

This blog on the customised 48 port network switch originally comes from our friends USA based Crystal Group, Inc.  Technology leaders in rugged computer hardware, specialising in the design and manufacture of custom and commercial rugged servers, embedded computing, networking devices, displays, and data storage for high reliability in harsh environments.

In this blog, Crystal discusses working with an International Aerospace, Transport and Defence Company. By listening to their customer’s requirements and by using their critical problem-solving skills within their team, they were able to develop a 48-port 10Gbe switch with front power input access for a new Airborne application that achieved their customer’s objectives and delivered exceptional performance.

Crystal Group delivers the same outstanding service and support to our Australian and New Zealand Customers.  Metromatics are proud to sell and support their product line.

Customised 48 Port Network Switch Blog

In early 2020 an international aerospace, transport and defence company came to Crystal Group.  They had a need for a 48-port 10Gbe switch that could support a mix of 48 ports of 1/10Gbe SFP/SFP+ connections with front power input for a new airborne application.

The switch also needed to have a 50ms holdup.  This is the standard power transient needed to transition back and forth between aircraft and ground power per IAW MIL-STD-704.

Starting with Crystal’s RCS7750-48F was a clear choice.  As it met the company’s core requirements for number of ports and SFP connections. However, the unit’s power and maintenance were all located at the rear of the chassis.  The opposite of the request for all I/O, power and maintenance ports to be on the front of the switch.

Crystal’s engineers worked closely with the organisation’s team.  They developed a variant model.  By adding in some height to reroute the port locations and modify the I/O without any impact to the switch’s existing capabilities or performance standards.

Overall, Crystal Group addressed the company’s unique rugged networking requirements by adapting one of our scalable networking switch designs.  Achieved with a simple, yet effective, design adjustment and strong collaboration with the organisation’s team.
