Sound Level Meter

Measure and assess workplace, environmental, machinery and product noise with a sound level meter suited to your application. Metromatics supplies portable Class 1 and Class 2 versions, data-logging instruments and noise-monitoring solutions for customers across Australia and New Zealand.

Our range supports applications from straightforward noise checks through to precision acoustic measurements and detailed analysis. Available capabilities include sound pressure level measurement, time and frequency weighting, data logging, statistical analysis and long-term noise monitoring.

What Is a Sound Level Meter?

It measures sound pressure and displays the result in decibels (dB). It typically combines a microphone, preamplifier, signal processor and display to provide repeatable measurements of noise levels.

Depending on the model, measurements may include:

  • Sound pressure level (Lp or SPL)
  • Equivalent continuous sound level (Leq)
  • Peak sound level (Lpeak)
  • Maximum and minimum sound levels
  • Fast, Slow and Impulse time weighting
  • A, C and Z frequency weighting
  • Logged and statistical noise data

Class 1 and Class 2 Sound Level Meters

Sound level meters are commonly classified according to IEC 61672.

Class 1  provide greater precision and a wider frequency range. They are generally selected for environmental assessments, engineering investigations, laboratory testing, product development and applications where measurement accuracy is critical.

Class 2 are suitable for general-purpose noise surveys, workplace checks, machinery assessments and other applications where dependable field measurements are required without the higher performance of a Class 1 instrument.

The correct class will depend on the applicable standard, required accuracy, measurement environment and how the results will be used.

Sound Level Meter Applications

It can support a wide range of acoustic measurement tasks, including:

  • Occupational and workplace noise assessment
  • Environmental noise monitoring
  • Machinery and equipment noise checks
  • Product noise testing
  • Automotive and transportation testing
  • Building and room acoustics
  • Industrial maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Research, education and laboratory testing

Choosing the Right Sound Level Meter

When selecting a sound level meter, consider the required instrument class, measurement parameters, frequency range, time and frequency weightings, data-logging capacity and reporting requirements. Long-term or unattended monitoring may also require weather protection, remote communications, extended storage and a suitable power supply.

Metromatics can help you compare available models and select the right instrument,  microphone and calibration solution suited to your measurement requirements.
