XMC Products (also known as switched mezzanine card) is defined by the VITA 42.0 Specification. It is a natural extension of PCI by using the P15 connector allowing it to support PCI Express (PCIe). Plus develop other high speed serial formats such as Serial RapidIO® (SRIO) and parallel RapidIO.
The XMC Board is the same size as the PMC Version. The XMC Product uses the PCIe bus that is native on many CPU Boards. This eliminates the need for PCI to PCI Bridge Chip. Also, designers are able to achieve a higher bandwidth by using XMC due to the number of serial lines available (x1, x4, x8 or x16).
PCIe is the most common variant. However, some Defence Companies prefers the Serial RapidIO® (SRIO) bus version instead. Typically, SRIO is used to connect networks of peer to peer embedded processors due to high bandwidth, low latency applications. It allows for functional partitioning of field replaceable units or hot swap applications.
