Industrial Remote Tank Level Monitoring Systems

Wireless Tank Level Monitor by Levelcon Image

Monitor tanks, industrial liquids and remote assets without relying on routine manual level checks with a remote tank level monitoring system.

Metromatics supplies configurable LevelCon remote tank monitoring systems for fuels, lubricants, chemicals, LPG, wastewater, fertilisers and other compatible materials. Each system combines an appropriate sensor, communications gateway and the LevelCon Portal.

Because every application is different, Metromatics selects the sensing technology and gateway according to the stored material, tank design, measurement range, site conditions and available communications coverage.

What Is a Remote Tank Monitoring System?

A remote tank monitoring system measures the contents of a tank and makes the reported information available through an online platform.

The system has three main components:

  1. The sensor measures the level. Depending on the application, it may use radar, ultrasonic, hydrostatic pressure, differential pressure, a float or another measurement method.
  2. The gateway collects and transmits the reading. Available configurations support cellular, local wireless and satellite communication.
  3. The LevelCon Portal displays the data. Authorised users can review reported levels, historical trends, asset locations and configured alerts.

The reporting frequency and available functions depend on the selected equipment and service configuration.

What Can LevelCon Systems Monitor?

Depending on the selected sensor, LevelCon systems can monitor:

  • Diesel, petrol and other compatible fuels
  • Oils and lubricants
  • Water and wastewater
  • Liquid fertiliser and feed
  • LPG and propane
  • Compatible chemicals and corrosive liquids
  • Bitumen emulsion
  • Molasses, grease and other viscous materials
  • Liquid flow
  • Pressure and differential pressure
  • Temperature and humidity
  • Mobile tanks and industrial assets
  • Compatible Modbus instruments and equipment

Material compatibility must be confirmed for the specific liquid, concentration, temperature, pressure and selected sensor.

Industrial Tank-Level Sensor Options

LevelCon does not rely on one sensing method. Instead, the sensor can be selected to suit the tank and stored material. The Sensor can be wired or wireless.

Hydrostatic pressure sensors

A hydrostatic sensor measures the pressure created by the liquid above it and converts that measurement into liquid level. Available options support water, wastewater, fuels, lubricants and selected chemicals.

Chemical-resistant sensors

Chemical-resistant hydrostatic sensors use specialised wetted materials for selected aggressive liquids. Metromatics will confirm compatibility before recommending a sensor.

Radar and ultrasonic sensors

Radar and ultrasonic sensors provide non-contact measurement by detecting the distance to the material surface. They can suit applications where contact with the stored product is undesirable.

Differential-pressure sensors

Differential-pressure sensors can support pressurised vessels, liquid gases and other specialised industrial applications.

Float gauges and propane dials

Compatible float sensors and remote-ready propane dials provide level information for LPG tanks and other approved tank configurations.

Laser sensors

Laser sensors can measure selected viscous products and bulk materials, including grease, liquid feed and compatible dry materials.

Flowmeters and industrial instruments

LevelCon gateways can also collect information from selected flowmeters, Modbus instruments and other compatible industrial equipment.

Cellular, Wireless and Satellite Communication

LevelCon offers several communications options for fixed, mobile and remote installations.

Depending on the gateway and configuration, these can include:

  • LTE Cat-M1
  • NB-IoT
  • Multi-carrier SIM options
  • ISM wireless communication with compatible LevelCon sensor nodes
  • Optional Globalstar satellite communication
  • Secure cloud communication
  • JSON API integration

Cellular communication suits sites with compatible mobile coverage. Meanwhile, satellite connectivity can support selected remote locations where cellular service is unavailable or unreliable.

A suitable LevelCon gateway can also collect measurements from compatible wireless sensor nodes located within communication range.

LevelCon Remote Monitoring Gateways

Metromatics can configure the monitoring system using the gateway that best suits the application.

LevelCon StarPin

The StarPin is a compact solar-powered cellular monitor for tanks, mobile assets and equipment. It also supports GPS location and vibration-based runtime monitoring.

LevelCon F200

The F200 is a solar-powered industrial monitoring gateway with broad sensor compatibility, GPS and an always-on local LCD. Available configurations support cellular, local wireless and optional satellite communication.

LevelCon F100M and F100MX

The F100 family supports remote tank and asset monitoring using compatible wired or wireless sensors. Available variants provide cellular and satellite communication options together with local level indication.

Stationary tank monitors

LevelCon stationary monitors provide local tank-level indication and can connect to compatible sensors and external monitoring equipment.

LevelCon Portal for Remote Tank Level Monitoring System

The LevelCon Portal provides authorised users with remote access to connected tanks and assets.

Depending on the system configuration, users can:

  • View current reported measurements
  • Monitor multiple tanks and locations
  • Review historical graphs and trends
  • Configure high- and low-level alerts
  • Receive supported email and SMS notifications
  • View GPS asset locations
  • Create dashboards and reports
  • Download monitoring data
  • Integrate compatible data through a JSON API

This information can help operators plan deliveries, manage inventory and reduce trips made solely to check tank levels.

Configure a Remote Tank Monitoring System

The correct system depends on what you need to measure—not simply the gateway model.

Before recommending a solution, Metromatics considers:

  • The stored material
  • Tank dimensions and construction
  • Required measurement range and accuracy
  • Sensor material compatibility
  • Available tank connections
  • Cellular and satellite coverage
  • Available power and solar exposure
  • Reporting and alert requirements
  • Integration with other platforms
  • Hazardous-area requirements
