Compact Mission Data Recorder with Defence-Grade Encryption

Compact mission recorder RIPR 1401

Introducing the Enhanced Calculex RIPR Model 1401

Modern defence and aerospace platforms are generating more data than ever before. From flight test instrumentation and sensor fusion to maintenance analytics and mission debrief, the challenge is no longer just capturing data — it’s capturing it securely, reliably, and in constrained environments.

To meet these evolving requirements, Calculex, a division of Spectra Defense Technologies, has enhanced its field-proven RIPR® (Recorder, Integrated Processor and Router) Model 1401.

Metromatics is pleased to make this advanced recorder available to customers across Australia and New Zealand as the authorised local distributor.

Enterprise-Grade Security in a Smartphone-Sized Recorder

The RIPR Model 1401 delivers full recorder, processing, and routing capability in an ultra-compact package. Roughly the size of a smartphone. Despite its small footprint. The system has already been integrated across more than 100 military test aircraft in U.S. In addition, allied programs, supporting both next-generation and legacy platforms.

The latest enhancements further strengthen the platform with:

  • AES-256 FIPS 140-2 certified encryption
  • Expanded 1TB onboard storage
  • Additional commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) interface options

These upgrades allow the RIPR 1401 to support classified defence missions. As well as secure failure-rate monitoring for commercial aircraft, all within the same ruggedised architecture.

Defence-Grade Encryption and Expanded Data Capacity

Security is now a baseline requirement for mission and maintenance data — not an optional feature. The addition of AES-256 FIPS 140-2 certified encryption ensures sensitive data is protected at rest. Therefore, supporting compliance with U.S. and allied data protection standards.

The expanded 1TB storage capacity allows operators to retain significantly larger volumes of:

  • Flight and test data
  • Mission sensor recordings
  • Maintenance and reliability information

This makes the enhanced RIPR 1401 equally suited to defence operations and commercial aviation programs. Those that require secure, long-term data retention for analysis and compliance.

Flexible I/O for Modern Avionics and Test Architectures

To support a wider range of platforms and data sources, the enhanced RIPR Model 1401 includes a new COTS I/O module with:

  • Eight channels of RS-422 or single-ended PCM, software-configurable as inputs or outputs up to 20 Mbps per channel
  • Eight channels of standard-definition video
  • Eight channels of MIL-STD-1553

The baseline controller also provides:

  • Dual 1 Gbps Ethernet
  • PCM
  • Analog audio
  • Discrete I/O

This flexible interface mix enables straightforward integration into modern avionics, flight-test, and mission systems without extensive platform redesign.

Modular, Field-Programmable Design of the Compact Mission Data Recorder with Defence-Grade Encryption

A key advantage of the RIPR 1401 is its modular, stackable architecture. Mission-specific configurations can be implemented without changing the host platform, helping to:

  • Extend platform service life
  • Reduce total cost of ownership
  • Support evolving mission requirements

Ethernet and serial interfaces allow for real-time system monitoring. In addition, routing changes, and link-speed configuration during operation. An important capability for dynamic test and mission environments.

Proven Across Air, Land, and Sea Applications

The RIPR Model 1401 supports integrated sensor recording and real-time mission data management for:

  • Electro-optical / infrared (EO/IR) systems
  • Radar
  • Electronic warfare
  • Flight test instrumentation

Applications span training, mission debrief, command-and-control, and operational analysis across defence and commercial platforms.

Qualification, Compliance, and Interoperability

Designed for harsh operational environments, the RIPR Model 1401 is tested and qualified to:

  • MIL-STD-810 (environmental)
  • MIL-STD-461 (EMC)
  • MIL-STD-704 (aircraft power)

The system is fully compliant with IRIG 106. The U.S. Department of Defense standard for digital flight data recording and playback. Calculex contributed to the development of IRIG 106. And continues to actively support the global test and evaluation community, ensuring long-term interoperability across programs.
