New 2U Rackmount Receiver Combines Dual-Channel Telemetry Reception, Touchscreen Control, Diversity Processing and Flexible Network Options
Metromatics has announced the availability of the Lumistar LS-28-DRSM-R2D Dual-Channel Telemetry Receiver. This flexible 2U rackmount receiver supports telemetry ground receiving applications that demand reliable signal acquisition, processing and system integration.
The LS-28-DRSM-R2D combines two independent telemetry receiver channels with digital diversity combining. As a result, engineers gain greater flexibility when designing systems for challenging RF environments.
In addition, a front-panel touchscreen gives operators local access to key receiver controls and status information. This simplifies setup, monitoring and operation directly from the equipment rack.
For applications that require reliable telemetry reception, the receiver supports several diversity techniques. These include optimal-ratio combining, equal-gain combining and best-channel selection.
Engineers can operate the two receiver channels independently. Alternatively, they can combine the channels to improve signal reliability. This flexibility supports applications that use polarisation, frequency or spatial diversity.
The receiver supports up to five RF bands. Moreover, Lumistar offers customer-defined bands across the 200 MHz to 6 GHz frequency range.
The LS-28-DRSM-R2D also supports several telemetry demodulation formats. These include PCM/FM, BPSK, QPSK, SOQPSK and Multi-H CPM. Depending on the selected format, the receiver supports data rates of up to 60 Mbps.
Supporting Modern Telemetry Ground Stations
The LS-28-DRSM-R2D supports both traditional telemetry architectures and modern network-based ground station environments.
Depending on the configuration, engineers can use time-stamped UDP streaming, Telemetry over IP and data decommutation. Therefore, teams can move telemetry data efficiently between receiving, processing, recording and analysis systems.
The system can also record telemetry internally. For example, it can capture Channel 1, Channel 2 and the combined PCM output. This gives engineers an integrated option for applications that require local data capture.
In addition, Ethernet, USB and serial interfaces support receiver control, configuration and status monitoring.
These capabilities make the LS-28-DRSM-R2D suitable for telemetry applications where system designers need to:
- improve reception reliability in difficult or changing RF conditions;
- support multiple frequencies, modulation formats and telemetry data rates;
- combine signals from multiple receiving paths;
- integrate telemetry data with IP-based networks and processing systems;
- record telemetry for later analysis or mission review; and
- simplify system configuration, diagnostics and monitoring.
The LS-28-DRSM-R2D can also form part of a broader telemetry receiving and processing architecture. For example, Metromatics and Lumistar support complete telemetry ground systems for demanding test and operational environments.
These systems can combine RF reception, data processing, recording, simulation and network-based data delivery. You can read more about Lumistar telemetry ground systems here.
Integrated Diagnostics and System Testing
The receiver includes several built-in diagnostic tools. As a result, engineers can use the system for commissioning, troubleshooting and ongoing monitoring.
Diagnostic displays include eye patterns, signal constellations and the 70 MHz IF spectrum. These tools help engineers assess signal quality and receiver performance.
The system also includes a standard 70 MHz IF modulator. Therefore, engineers can perform receiver loopback testing without additional external equipment for basic system checks.
In addition, the software-defined architecture supports software and firmware upgrades. This allows users to adapt system capabilities as telemetry requirements change.
Flexible Configuration for Different Telemetry Applications
Lumistar designed the LS-28-DRSM-R2D to support different telemetry system requirements. Therefore, engineers do not need to work within a single fixed receiver architecture.
Teams can select RF bands, modulation formats, processing capabilities, network streaming and recording options for the intended application.
Metromatics can also help engineering and procurement teams identify an appropriate configuration. For example, we can review required RF bands, modulation formats, data rates, diversity requirements and output interfaces.
This approach can help teams specify the receiver around both current technical requirements and broader system integration needs.
