Understanding Analog Signature Analysis with the Huntron Tracker 2800S

The Huntron Tracker 2800S is designed for testing PCB boards using Analog Signature Analysis. This method is effective because it tests components without powering them up, preventing potential damage.

Here’s how it works:

  • Analog Signature Analysis: The Tracker applies a current-limited AC signal across two points of a component. The resulting current flow creates a vertical deflection, and the applied voltage creates a horizontal deflection. Together, these form a V/I (voltage/current) signature that represents the component’s condition. By analysing this signature, you can quickly identify if a component is good, bad, or marginal.
  • Variable Range Parameters: The Tracker 2800S features adjustable voltage, source resistance, and frequency settings, offering over 100 combinations for precise testing.
  • Cable-Based Scanning: The device includes two 40-pin IDC connectors for quick PCB connector scanning. If differences in signatures are detected, you can trace the issues down to the component level, saving troubleshooting time.
  • IC Clips and Cables: You can use IC clips and cables to scan standard ICs and select SOICs efficiently. These accessories are available from suppliers like Digi-Key.
  • The 2800S is a great off-line support tool for the automated Huntron Access Prober diagnostic systems.
