Monitoring Freeway Gantries with Dewesoft Solutions

Freeway Gantry being Monitored in WA

Metromatics recently assisted CMR Tech to deliver a comprehensive monitoring solution for the Western Australia Government, aimed at analysing the effects of vibration and displacement on overhanging freeway gantries in Perth. These structures endure significant stress from tens of thousands of daily traffic movements, environmental conditions, and nearby train vibrations.

Project Overview

The primary objective of the project is to compare real-world data with existing structural computer models to assess and manage structural fatigue. This analysis not only ensures the longevity and safety of the current infrastructure but also provides valuable insights to refine future design and construction techniques.

Selected Products and Monitoring Setup

To achieve accurate and reliable data collection, Metromatics provided CMR Tech with the following Dewesoft products:

  • IOLITE 6xSTG x 2: High-precision modules for strain gauge measurements.
  • IOLITE 3xMEMS: Advanced MEMS accelerometers for vibration and motion monitoring.
  • WXT-536 Weather Station: Captures environmental conditions such as wind speed, temperature, and humidity, connected via serial communication.
  • IP Camera: Provides video evidence of large vehicle movements and their correlation with gantry oscillations.

Long-Term Data Logging and Remote Monitoring

The system will log data continuously over a 12-month period. The monitoring setup is remotely accessible, enabling engineers to analyse the data in real-time and track the gantries’ performance without requiring frequent on-site visits.

Impact and Benefits

The project delivers critical insights by correlating traffic patterns, environmental factors, and structural responses. These findings help:

  • Validate and improve existing structural models.
  • Inform strategies to mitigate fatigue and extend the lifespan of the gantries.
  • Enhance the design and construction of future infrastructure to better withstand dynamic stresses.

Why Dewesoft?

Dewesoft’s modular and high-performance data acquisition systems were selected for their versatility, accuracy, and reliability in challenging environments. Paired with Metromatics’ local expertise, this solution ensured seamless integration, deployment, and ongoing support throughout the project.
